Drone photogrammetry and orthomosaics

An orthomosaic is a map you can measure on. Not a pretty aerial for the cover page, a geometrically corrected image tied to control, at a resolution where the crack, the joint, and the paint line are all visible.

01/The point

Imagery that carries coordinates.

A raw aerial photo has perspective distortion baked into it. Measure across one and you are measuring the lens as much as the ground. Orthorectification removes that, so distances and areas on the image are distances and areas on the site.

We collect photogrammetry on the same mobilization as the LiDAR, tied to the same control. The imagery and the elevation model agree with each other because they came off the same flight, not because someone forced them together later.

How we fly it

Resolution set by the question

Ground sample distance is chosen for what you need to see. Documenting a parking field is not the same flight as documenting a stucco crack pattern, and pretending otherwise wastes a mobilization.

Overlap and geometry

Forward and side overlap planned for the surface, with oblique passes added where verticals matter. Facades need angles that a straight nadir grid will never give you.

Control and check points

Targets observed on site and held in processing, with independent check points kept out of the solution so the residuals mean something.

Radiometry and timing

Flown in light that will not blow out white roofs or lose detail in shadow. On the coast that usually means planning around sun angle and glare off the water.

Common questions.

Is photogrammetry good enough, or do I need LiDAR?
On open, hard, well textured surfaces, photogrammetry is excellent and often the better value. Under canopy, on water, on uniform sand, or on anything reflective, it struggles and LiDAR does not. Most sites we fly want both, which is why we collect both on one mobilization.
What resolution can you deliver?
Sub inch ground sample distance is achievable on the surfaces that matter when we plan the flight for it. Higher resolution means lower altitude, more lines and more processing, so we set it against what you actually need to measure rather than defaulting to the maximum.
Can you produce a model our whole team can look at without special software?
Yes. A web viewable model link means the estimator, the architect and the board member all look at the same thing without installing anything.
How current does documentation stay?
It is a snapshot with a date on it, which is exactly what makes it useful in a dispute. For active sites, a recurring flight on the same plan gives you a series you can compare honestly.
